When our babies are poorly, we will do anything to make them feel better. Alongside visiting the doctor, did you know that there are a variety of natural home remedies which can soothe your baby? These natural remedies can help with everything from constipation to teething.
Natural remedies for babies have been around for thousands of years and they are a fantastic complement to modern medicine. If you’re a parent, grandparent, or someone with children in their lives who wants to try out some natural solutions, you’ve come to the right place. We have a handful of home remedies just for you.
As always, before trying anything new, please make sure you consult your doctor, just to be safe.
Natural remedies for when baby has a blocked-up nose
Colds and congestion are miserable enough when you’re an adult, but when you’re a baby it’s even worse. Luckily, there is a simple natural remedy for babies which can be found right within your kitchen cupboard. Enter the humble onion.
A sliced onion left by baby’s crib can work wonders, as the sulphur in the onion draws out mucus and fluids, leaving your little one breathing more easily. It’s a bit of a smelly option, but it’s worth it!
When baby is burning up
If your baby is less than three months old and has a fever, then the doctor is your first port of call. If, however, your child is older, a lemon bath is a fantastic natural remedy for babies. Lemon is a powerful antioxidant and can be very soothing.
It couldn’t be easier. Slice some lemons into a bowl of lukewarm water, then use a flannel or cloth to give your baby a gentle bath. Just pay attention to the temperature of the water. Don’t be tempted to go too cold as that could actually make things worse.
Natural remedies for when baby can’t go
The natural remedy for constipation might well be one that many of us adults have turned to: prunes. Prunes get everything moving again as they contain sorbitol, a sugar alcohol which can have a mild laxative effect, making them an equally effective natural remedy for babies.
If your baby is already eating solids, it’s easy to slip some prunes into their next meal. The good news? Baby will probably enjoy the sweet flavour.
When baby has an itch
When your baby has dry, itchy skin, reach for the porridge oats. No, not for breakfast, but for bath time. An oat bath can even act as a natural remedy for babies with some forms of eczema.
All you need to do is grind or blend some oats down to a fine powder, then pour about half a cup under running water into the bath. Let baby soak for about fifteen minutes. You might even want to try swaddling them in a towel to help them relax. If they’re still itchy, you can offer an oat bath up to three times a day.
Natural remedies for when baby is teething
The women of our grandmothers’ generation used to give a nip of whisky to babies to soothe the pain as a “natural teething remedy”. We’re not suggesting that you give your little one alcohol, but luckily there are plenty of natural teething remedies and products around.
When babies are teething, they usually need something to chew on. We love this Wally the Watermelon toy from ethical brand Oli & Carol. It’s perfect for bath time! Teething gel can also be a great relief. This Natural Teething Gel from Jack N’ Jill is one of our favourite eco-friendly products. Finally, a dab of chamomile essential oil, which is non-toxic, can really help to ease the pain, making for a perfect natural teething remedy for babies.
When baby has a sore ear
Ear infections are really uncomfortable and you should definitely take your baby to see a doctor, because sometimes they need to be treated with antibiotics. However, there are some natural remedies for babies which can help with the discomfort.
It’s heat that helps in this situation. A warm compress held to the ear for 10-15 minutes can make things much better. Equally, a few drops of warm olive or sesame oil into the infected ear can help – but do ask your doctor first.
Natural remedies for when baby has pink eye
The curse of the school playground, conjunctivitis is itchy, uncomfortable and highly contagious. Again, see your doctor when this one strikes. Did you know, however, that you have a whole host of natural remedies for babies at your fingertips?
If you are breastfeeding, do not underestimate the magic of breast milk. All you need to do is dab a little of the magic liquid onto baby’s eyelids two or three times a day. Honey can also work well. Simply mix it with warm water and drip it into baby’s eyes using an eye dropper. We also have a guide to combining breastfeeding and pumping – be sure to check it out!
When baby has reflux
There are few things more uncomfortable for little ones than reflux. Luckily there are some simple, natural remedies for baby reflux which you can try, which might just make the world of difference.
Firstly, try feeding your baby sitting up. This will help with sending the milk in the right direction! It’s also a good idea to take a look at your diet. It may be that certain things you are eating are causing the reflux. As difficult as it is to give up cheese, starting with dairy might be the best course of action.
