Decorating a tween girl’s bedroom

As a child, your bedroom is just a room. As a tween, your bedroom becomes your sanctuary. Here’s our guide to the best bedroom styles for girls – which are eco-friendly too.

Redecorating a bedroom once a girl reaches that in-between stage – between child and teenager – is almost a rite of passage these days. Your daughter is not a baby anymore. She has her own personality and she is much more sure of what she wants. But with all the tween girl bedroom styles and the average parent spending around £5000 redecorating their children’s bedrooms before they turn 10, a whole new room can quickly mean an empty wallet.

That’s not to mention the cost to the environment, as things may well be renewed before they are fully worn out. Without further ado then, here is our guide to sustainable tween bedroom style. This might be the last bedroom you redecorate with your daughter, so make sure you get them involved. It’s a special chance to make the perfect space without harming the environment.

The bed is the centrepiece

It goes without saying that the key function of a bedroom is a place to sleep, so the bed is crucial. This is a great opportunity to set your daughter up with something which can last for a few years. Think practically about what she might need. Is a bunk bed with storage underneath a good way to make the most of the space? Or is a double bed the right choice, to make your life easier with all the inevitable sleepovers?

In terms of sustainability, look out for solid wooden bed frames where the wood is sustainably sourced. We love brands like FeelGood Eco Beds who offer a great range of wooden bed frames and deliver all over the UK. Or why not check out Etsy who stock plenty of beautiful handmade beds, many of which have eco-friendly credentials?

There might be some studying too…

If your daughter is about to enter secondary school, chances are that their homework is going to be increasing. Make them feel more enthusiastic about the whole thing with a dedicated workspace which is fit for purpose.

Handy parents may want to try to put together a desk themselves out of recycled wood or old pallets. Or you might want to scour second-hand furniture shops for the perfect desk. If you’d like to shop vintage in pandemic-friendly social-distanced style, there are tons of online choices like Chairish, Ebay, and Facebook Marketplace. You can also visit Etsy’s Reclaimed tables section to look for a desk you and your little girl will surely love.

If you’re buying new, we love this model from Woodmancote Retro which is simple enough to look stunning in any room. And above the desk, hang a cork board for your daughter to pin her photos to. Not only is cork a super-sustainable material, but this will save your walls from those familiar blu-tack stains.

Storage = Less mess

Your tween daughter may be following the familiar pattern of a perpetually messy bedroom. And no guide to bedroom styles for girls would be complete without some smart storage solutions. After all, if there is something to put the mess, it stands to reason that the room will be tidy… Right?

However you are decorating your daughter’s bedroom, these seagrass and jute baskets made a great home for bits and bobs. They’re also made from biodegradable, recyclable materials by an employer who pays a living wage in Bangladesh. Or if you need something bigger, these sustainable storage boxes from the folks at Two Green Leaves look excellent in every bedroom.

A beautiful vintage trunk that can also double-up as storage and a coffee table can be used instead of buying tables for your daughter’s room. You might find you have something suitable in the attic, or find one at a nearby boot sale!

Get colourful

The walls are all-important for a tween girl’s bedroom style. This is where your daughter can really make her mark on the room. If a total repaint is in order, get your eco-friendly paint from Dorset-based company Farrow & Ball. Just try to avoid painting the whole room lime-green if you think your daughter might hate it in two years’ time.

For a budget-friendly option, go for UK-based Earthborn. With its full list of environment-friendly ingredients placed on the can, you’ll have every girl’s favourite colours like Peach Baby, Cupcake, and Rosie Posie, all in breathable high-quality paints.

The idea of painting might not be your cup of tea, in which case a feature wall can have a striking effect. We love the amazing range of eco-friendly wallpaper at Wolf Gordon. They have something for everyone!

Another option that’s reusable, non-toxic, and PVC-free are the peel and stick removable wallpapers from Spoonflower. They have great prints to choose from for a tween girl’s bedroom and their manufacturing plants harness wind-energy so you’re sure it’s undergone a sustainable making process.

Make it to last

Of course, you can’t predict what your daughter will like once she becomes a fully-fledged teenager, but decorating a tween girl’s bedroom with longevity in mind is a key part of sustainability. Sure, she loves horses now, but will horse wallpaper still be her favourite in a couple of years? Try to stick to simple choices in decoration and buy sustainable furniture which is designed to be long-lasting.
