Looking for an eco-friendly holiday with kids?

At home or abroad, wherever you journey this summer, read our guide to the best in eco-friendly holiday options with kids.

There’s nothing we love more than a holiday. A chance to relax with our family in a new place, to enjoy the sunshine, to get away from it all… What could be better? However, for those families with sustainability in mind, a holiday can be a sure-fire way to undo the eco-friendly work of the rest of the year.

It’s not just flights. When considering the carbon costs of a holiday, elements like the food you eat can play a part as well. Research has shown that the average ten-day holiday in an all-inclusive resort emits 265kg of carbon, which is 65kg more than if you stayed home. It might not sound like much, but when you multiply it by the number of people in your family, it starts to add up.

Luckily, that’s what we at Y’earn are here for. We have put together the ultimate guide to an eco-friendly holiday with kids, so that you can enjoy your holiday, and do the world good at the same time.

Staycations that are eco-friendly

For some eco-friendly families, the best way to keep their holiday carbon footprint nice and low is to avoid flying altogether. And why not? There are so many wonderful holiday spots across the UK, many of which now boast serious eco-friendly credentials.

The National Trust is an iconic conservation charity in the UK. Renting one of their holiday cottages is a great way to explore stunning seaside locations, picture-perfect villages and the best of the British countryside. The National Trust have put together a list of their best eco-conscious cottages and whatever you are after, you will find it here. We love the fact that 100% of the cost of the rental is put towards conservation work.

What we love about Organic Holidays is the choice. If you are looking for the perfect place to set up camp, they can help. If, alternatively, camping is your nightmare, they also offer a selection of boutique hotels. Any places which offer meals are usually at least 50% organic and they have locations across the UK, to suit your every desire.

Eco-friendly holiday companies we love

If you have made the decision to venture to foreign shores, there are many companies who offer eco-friendly holiday options for those with kids. After all, showing your children the world is important. Let’s just make sure it’s sustainable.

With twenty years’ experience, Responsible Travel are committed to make sure that your holiday abroad has a positive, rather than a negative, impact. They believe it’s important to engage with local communities, instead of spending a week in your hotel. We love their mission and their charity work, as well as their section on family travel. They do good, so that you can too.

Every holiday which is booked with Steppes Travel means a contribution to the Steppes Fund for Change, which is a fund that supports climate activism and women empowerment, among other causes. Steppes offer an amazing range of family holidays at home and abroad. Gorilla trekking in Uganda? A trip on the iconic Trans-Siberian railway? No problem. You and your family will be set for the adventure of a lifetime.

Our Top Tips

Once you’ve decided where you want to go, there are a few things you can do to make sure that your holiday is as eco-friendly as possible.

  • Pack water bottles which are BPA-free for all of the family. That way, wherever you end up, you can refill your bottle and avoid plastic waste.
  • If you make use of any paper maps or tourist brochures, put them back when you’ve finished so the next visitors can use them.
  • When choosing souvenirs, try to buy items which are locally made. Think carefully about whether you will actually use it when you get home. Holidays have a tendency to make us forget our green shopping habits.
  • Pack a couple of reusable tote bags so that you can pick up food and souvenirs without generating more plastic waste.
  • If there are specific items that you and your family need for your holiday, which you know you will not use in the future, why not rent them from us? Y’earn makes renting easy and it’s kinder to Mother Earth as well.
  • Remember to take eco-friendly sun cream with you, we wrote a post on why this is important and our favourite brands
