How to get involved with sustainable and eco-friendly gifting (for Mother’s Day)

Mothers day sustainable gifts being given to Mum and Nan by grandaughter

Mother’s Day is just around the corner. There’s never been a better time to show mums some love. Whether they’re home-schooling heroes, remarkable key workers, or simply inspirational women, the important ladies in your life deserve to be spoiled.

Giving beautifully wrapped gifts is one of the nation’s favourite ways to show appreciation for friends and family members. However, it comes at an environmental cost. According to recent statistics, UK households send around 5 million tonnes of wrapping paper to landfill every year and waste around £700 million annually on unwanted Christmas gifts. Discarded gifts often contain plastics and other materials that are difficult to recycle and clog up our oceans.

Fortunately, it is possible to break free from our environmentally destructive habits and enjoy a guilt-free Mother’s Day. We’ve put together a list of eco-friendly gift ideas for new mums and experienced mums alike to get you started.

Make your own gifts and cards

Even if you don’t consider yourself creative or artistically gifted, presenting a mum with a homemade present and card is a great way to demonstrate your love for them. Making things costs much more time and effort than purchasing a gift online, after all.

So, what should you make?

Baked goods are sure to go down a treat if you’re skilled in the kitchen. While painting a canvas or crafting something from wood could work well if you’re artistically inclined. When wrapping the gift, try to use recycled, recyclable, or reusable materials such as furoshiki.

Just remember to have some fun and make the most of your strengths. Try to personalise the gift as much as possible.

Our favourite eco-friendly gifts for mum

If you’re short on time or lacking in creative inspiration, there are still plenty of eco-conscious brands out there. They often sell fabulous eco-friendly gifts for new mums and older mums. Here are just a few of the best:

Sukin Super Greens Chia Seed Oil

Packed full of nourishing olive fruit, hemp seed, and baobab oils, this little bottle of facial oil is perfect for mums with a penchant for skincare. Best of all, it is vegan, cruelty-free, biodegradable, and 100% carbon neutral!

Desert in Bloom Boxed Scented Candle

Made using natural soy candle wax lightly scented with lime and bay leaf. This indulgent gift is much better for the environment than a standard candle. It’s also highly affordable at a sweet £9.95!

A spa break or other experience

Gifting an experience rather than a physical item is a fabulous way to save on wrapping paper and plastic. Whether your mum is a fan of spa days, meals out, or trips to the theatre. There are plenty of great experiences out there to try!

Letterbox wine

If your mum has a taste for wine, why not indulge her with a bottle of novelty letterbox wine? As the name suggests, this 75cl bottle of booze is designed to slip neatly through an average UK letterbox. Great news if you want to avoid failed delivery notices. The bottles are also made from 100% recycled plastic, are completely recyclable, and come packaged in recyclable cardboard. There are a variety of wine brands that are now part of the Letterbox. So we’re sure you’ll find a perfect one for your mum (and you!).

It’s suitable for vegans and vegetarians and focuses on products that soothe some of the common discomforts experienced during and after pregnancy. They also donate £1 from every gift box sold to YoungMinds.

Our favourite sustainable subscriptions

If you’re hoping to gift something extra special this year, why not invest in an ethical subscription service. Your mum will continue to receive a monthly pick-me-up for as long as you’d like!

Arena Flowers

Arena flowers were ranked the UK’s most ethical florist in 2019 – so you’ll make your Mum and Mother Nature smile. They removed single-use plastics from their products and are working on their supply chain too. For every bouquet you buy, they plant a tree in countries experiencing deforestation. This not only combats climate change but also helps to alleviate poverty in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Authentic House

These subscription boxes are sustainable, vegan and plastic-free and start from £15.50. They can be personalised and include a variety of items from candles to chocolate to notebooks. We love that a tree is planted for every box sold and that you’ll find out who made the items and how they help the planet.

Nourish

Nourish is a new wellbeing app for mums offering bite-sized calm & wellbeing in mum’s pocket. The app is a curated library of over 200 meditations, videos and quick reads across mindfulness, yoga, yoga nidra psychology and more all tailor-made for mums by a team of wellbeing experts, who are all mums themselves.

The Nourish app empowers mums to boost their wellbeing and happiness so it’s a great way to help them sustain themselves! We spoke with their founder on the importance of self-care and not ‘running on empty’ which you can read here.

The bottom line: Get them something they’ll use!

As you can see, there are tonnes of options out there for eco-friendly Mother’s Day gifts. As the world wakes up to climate change, it is important we all do our bit to nurture the planet, so choosing from any of the above gifts is both ethical and generous. However, it is worth noting that eco-friendly gifts can still be wasteful if they’re unwanted.

If you’re unconvinced by what you’ve seen so far, check out this lovely list of gifts from Glamour Magazine. While they may not all have the eco-credentials of our choices, if they’re well-loved and reused then we’ll count that as a win for the planet!
